Hello friends,
I’m writing to let you know about a special concert I’m helping to organize for one of my biggest heroes, Jim McNeely.

On April 25 & 26, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be performing a piece of mine on their Contemporary Jazz Masterpieces concert, alongside works by my friends and colleagues Miho Hazama, Jihye Lee, and Helen Sung.

The JJA Jazz Awards are celebrating a milestone — their 30th Anniversary! I’m very honored to be nominated in three categories: Composer of the Year, Arranger of the Year, and Large Ensemble of the Year.

My Secret Society co-conspirators and I will be joining forces with the brilliant pianist Aaron Diehl to close out 92NY’s Jazz in July series on July 26.

Ever since my poppa took me to see Henry Mancini lead the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in a pops program, I have always dreamed of conducting an orchestra. Last night in Groningen, with the Metropole Orkest and Cécile McLorin Salvant, it finally happened.

With the new year comes new beginnings. As I write this, I’m deep in the throes of preparations for two milestones: my debut as the new Composer in Residence for the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, and my debut conducting the Metropole Orkest.

One of my favorite genre of video is the one where an artist pulls physical media from a library and talks about the art that inspires them — you know, like the Criterion Collection Closet Picks. So I was absolutely thrilled to participate in the Nonesuch Records version of this, Nonesuch Selects.
